In Puerto Rico, establishments for the care of the elderly — long-term care homes and assisted-living residences — house vulnerable older adults who need continuous care and supervision. To keep them safe, these settings must have staff trained in first aid and CPR, able to intervene immediately in an emergency.

Establishment for the care of the elderly (long-term care home / assisted living), overseen by the Department of Health, following the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and Home Health Aide (HHA) model.

The first-aid requirement

These settings must ensure a rapid emergency response: staff able to provide first aid and CPR to older adults until medical help arrives. Under the US-style model, the CNA requires a Department of Health-approved training program, the CNAE exam and a mandatory valid CPR certification; CPR is a required prerequisite, not sufficient alone for licensure.

A recognized, up-to-date CPR/first-aid certificate is a mandatory credential for the role; it is in addition to occupational training (CNA/HHA) and must be renewed periodically.
